Creating Hygge in Spring
Hygge is about consciously creating moments that make you feel good, and this doesn’t need to stop just because winter is over. Here’s how we continue to bring hygge into our lives as spring blossoms.
1. Decorate with fresh seasonal flowers.
If I can afford to I’ll go to our local florist and support them, if money is tight (and it is at the moment with the cost of heating rising so rapidly) then I’ll grab a few bunches from Lidl.
I love to get tulips, daffodils and peonies as well as roses. If I can get bulb plants like daffodils and hyacinths then I will do that as they last longer.
I love to put them all through the house to remind us that life is fresh and beautiful and that light and sunshine are going to increase. They keep me smiling through those April showers.
2. Spring scents
Change the scents in your home. We like smokey, sandalwood scents in autumn and winter but for spring I like to change to burning floral, fruity scented candles. Summer is more of a wax melt and incense person but she too will opt for more floral scents at this time of year, as well as fresh linen wax melts.
3. Get outside
You’ll probably still need your wellies but head out as much as you can and watch the world waking up around you.
See the leaves budding on the trees and the flowers blooming. Find all of the bluebells and look for frogspawn; moments in nature create so many hygge moments for our family.
We also adore a park trip in the early morning sunshine, before it’s too busy with the hustle and bustle of post-school run visits – it is well worth the early start to have the place largely to ourselves.
3. Open the windows!
Another way to get fresh natural scents into your home to create spring hygge is to open your windows and let nature in. I love to do this as often as possible, especially after it’s rained as the smell of ozone is intoxicating.
I also open as many windows as I can on the first reasonably warm day in spring to let the house breathe after a stuffy 6 months of being shut up. Getting that fresh air into every space will wake everything up.
5. Cook
You know how much I love to cook and eat, and if you really want to enjoy spring and create those special moments I can’t think of a better way than through cooking.
Take advantage of all the beautiful new produce that is now available; I adore asparagus season, the smell and varieties of fresh tomatoes, and all of the strawberries!
If you can get to a farm shop or farmers market you’ll get to chose some amazing seasonal goodies.
6. A good clean
In my opinion, there is nothing like a good full house clean and declutter to help create that sense of hygge. I don’t feel calm and consciously cosy if I am surrounded by clutter or dirt. I don’t mind the mess of everyday life – we have to live – but spring is an excellent time to take a look around and rehome anything that no longer serves you. Keeping your space decluttered, light, and airy will lead to more time to focus on creating those hygge moments, outside and in.
What are your favourite ways to create hygge in spring? We love hearing new ideas and ways to adapt this wonderful practice into our lives.
Love and light,
Livvy and Summer
