Natural, Homemade Moisturiser
I have been meaning to make my own moisturiser for quite a while now, I even bought all the ingredients ages ago but never made the time. This weekend, after two weeks of serious heat I finally got round to it. Summer came over and we had a lot of fun doing this, and it took a lot less time and effort than either of us had anticipated, it’s funny how that can often be the case isn’t it?
We both get dry skin in the summer heat but dislike using shop-bought moisturiser. Your skin is your largest organ and it is believed that it absorbs up to 80% of what is put on it, which is a scary thought when I think of some of the things I’ve mindlessly used over the years. I have made myself face and body moisturisers before so it was nice to return to that whilst introducing it to Summer at the same time.
This recipe uses only four ingredients, all of which are available at supermarkets and health food shops, and it’s nice and quick to make. Once made it will keep for about 3 months and I choose to keep mine in the fridge over the summer months so it doesn’t get too loose and runny.
Ingredients
- 1/4 cup olive oil
- 1/4 cup coconut oil
- 1/4 cup shea butter
- 1/4 cocoa butter
- 3-4 drops essential oils (optional)
Method
- Measure out all your ingredients and put them into a pyrex bowl. Place the bowl over a pan of simmering water on the hob, making sure the water doesn’t touch the bottom of your bowl.
- Stir together until all your ingredients have melted and are fully incorporated.
- Pour the mixture into a container and pop it into the fridge to harden – you want it to get to the point that when you push your finger into the mix it leaves a small mould.
- Pop your mixture into the food processor (I use the bread dough hook) and whip it for a minute or two to make it nice and creamy.
- Put back into your jars and store in the fridge for up to 3 months.
I hope you find this tutorial helpful and simple to do. We are loving using this moisturiser and it also means that when my littlies want to ‘be like Mama’ I can let them join in, safe in the knowledge there is nothing bad going onto their beautiful, young, pure skin.
