Seasonal Energy – Winter
Each phase of a cycle has a great purpose, and together they create a balanced whole. So while you will probably feel drawn to one or two seasons more than the others, it’s important to learn how to lean into all of the seasons, to gain the energy your body needs. By allowing ourselves to do this, to lean into and accept the energy of the seasons we allow ourselves to experience a more harmonious life.
If we reflect upon the seasons, as I’m going to, we can see that each one brings its own associations and characteristics that we can use as a foundation to create more seasonal joy.
As we are currently deep in the middle of winter I thought this was the place to start.
Winter
Despite losing all their leaves, and thus to many, their beauty, the winter trees still stand tall. This is because their core stability and energy is beneath the surface. A beautiful reminder to all of us.
The energy of winter is introspective, restful, reflective, and replenishing.
Winter is a good time to turn inwards and reconnect with our core selves. It’s a natural time to slow down, focus on less, be an observer.
I personally find that our modern society pushes against this energy. Forcing us to carry on the same as if it was summer. This is another reason that I don’t book much in for the winter months for myself or my family and why we don’t do New Year’s resolutions. It is completely the wrong time to draw upon the energy needed to start big new routines that involve huge energy shifts.
Winter is the season I find it hardest to connect to, but my beautiful children have been a big help. They have an innate ability to ‘give into’ the seasons and follow the flow. Over the last few years, as I have stopped pushing against it and succumbed to the quiet, dark, reflective nature of the season I have found a sense of peace.
Surrender to the energy of winter, sit in the discomfort, and see what you find. Whatever it is, it will likely help you heal and see clearly what you need ahead of spring and the season of growth.
Things we like to do in the winter
- Create sun catchers with the children
- Read aloud books as a family
- Teach the children to bake biscuits and deserts
- Read a lot ourselves in the evenings
- Spend our evenings doing puzzles and building lego together
- Family winter walks in the woods and along the beach
- Visit the library
- Plan our spring garden
- Declutter. I get the itch to sort and clean down items that have been overlooked
I would love to know how you spend your time and energy to best enjoy the winter months. Are you a winter lover or someone who is constantly waiting for spring?
