Vegan Sweets Review for Halloween

Even though we are vegan we still like to try and enjoy and celebrate different holidays. We have done this little sweets review to try and help you navigate the world of vegan sweets if you are new or maybe getting some on behalf of someone else.

Ideally, we would get all of our sweets and chocolates from a bulk food shop or make cookies to hand out, as we have done the last few years, but this isn’t always an option so we hope this little review is helpful as vegan sweets can be very expensive compared to ‘normal’ ones.

Dessert Pastilles

Initial query: “How are they different from fruit pastels?”

Then: “They taste a bit pear drop-y.”

Later: “They are different to fruit pastels…..I think you’re right, it’s the pear drop-y-ness”

Final review: “They kinda deal with the issue of needing something sweet…. but I’d rather have fruit pastels.”

Fizzy Cola Flavour Laces

Nice level of sour, reasonable size and nice and chunky.

They don’t taste of cola though and do leave a funny aftertaste.

Toddlers were not keen.

Fizzy Strawberry Flavour Laces

Really nice and sour and the overall opinion is they are much better than the cola ones.

Wouldn’t say they taste of strawberries particularly but if you like sour sweets these hit the spot.

Toddler: “nice in my face”.

Fizzy Multicoloured Belts

Not enjoyed by us at all.

Tasted like sugar and “gak”.

Summer: Tasted like purple skittles and they are gak. Paul: No they don’t take that back!

Candy Kittens Gourmies: Blood Orange + Pomegranate

Don’t look nice and I (Livvy) thought they taste like cleaning liquid. Summer and Paul just felt that you didn’t get the described flavour.

Toddlers really disliked them as they were so tough to chew.

These sweets cost £2 a bag and we don’t feel that they were worth the money.

Candy Kittens sour watermelon

Livvy & Paul: Nice, good chew, not very sour and did leave an odd after taste.

Summer: Didn’t even swallow the bit she put in her mouth, really not a fan.

Toddlers: Too sour!

These sweets also cost £2 a bag and we don’t feel that they were worth the money either.

The Natural Confectionery Co. Dino Mix

Fab shapes and sizes.

Toddlers and adults love them.

Best test and texture of all the sweets by far.

If we had to buy sweets in future I would get these every time.

£1 a bag and well worth the money in our family’s opinion!

Starburst original

We all like them, there was just fighting over what the best colour is (clearly red and purple are superior and Livvy and Paul are deluded – they think orange?!).

Comment your favourite below!

Also, after some research, it transpires that you cannot compost the wrappers which we are all quite disappointed about.

Skittles

Paul: Love

Livvy: Hate

Summer: Yes, except the purple one.

Toddlers: Can’t answer as they are too busy drooling multicoloured gunk down themselves (would like to note I had no intention of giving them these sweets as they are so small and hard and make me worry about choking but they took a few of the ones from my pile on the table when I was distracted).

Drumsticks and Refresher Sticks

Wouldn’t recommend them for younger children at all, super chewy and messy.

To be honest both types were super hard and didn’t taste of much.

Not at all like the lollies we remember having as kids!

Disappointed.

Mallows

Really good marshmallows and also the perfect size for hot chocolates.

Don’t taste ‘vegan’ if that makes sense.

This brand also have the option of bigger marshmallows which are perfect for roasting over a fire, just saying.

We will definitely be buying the Mallows again for hot chocolates over the colder months and if we need any sweets the winner for us was the Dino Mix. In our opinion they tasted by far the best and at £1 a bag they weren’t crazy expensive.

What vegan sweets do your family love? And do you think the purple skittles taste like ‘gak’?

We’d love to hear your thoughts!
