My Favourite Books to Read in Autumn
Does anyone else love to cosy up with particular books when the evenings start to grow longer and the fire needs to go on? Grab a cuppa and your best blanket and enjoy some of my favourite books with me this season.
Harry Potter and the Philosophers Stone By J.K. Rowling
This may be the most obvious mention ever, but I still felt it needed to be here. I first read this book in the autumn of the year I started High School and I have read it every autumn since (yes, that is a lot of years).
It is like a comfort blanket to me, I go completely into the story and all worries are forgotten. It makes me excited about Halloween and Christmas and all the magic to come.
Any Murder Mystery By Agatha Christie
I have no idea why I absolutely love a good murder mystery in autumn but I really really do and Agatha Christie is my favourite author to scratch this itch.
Miss Marple is my all-time favourite and I actually have a lot of the books as audiobooks that I can listen in the mornings before the children are up.
I also adore Murder on the Orient Express and if I have it on as an audiobook in the evenings then Paul will often join me.
Outlander By Diana Gabaldon
I tend to start in the middle of the series in autumn as I love the setting and all the seasonal descriptions. I also love the detail of all the work and labour that goes into cooking and creating beautiful things in the past.
It helps me get into the mindset of hunkering down at home and enjoying the colder season; turning my time towards cooking for my family and creating cosy memories. If you haven’t read these books I really recommend getting a copy of the first in the series (Cross Stitch) and jumping in.
The Book of Hygge By Louisa Thomsen Brits
This little book is one I go back to in an evening when I know I’ll have a few child-free hours over the next few days.
It gets me in the space to want to spend those hours digging out the blankets, finding ALL the candles and baking gingerbread men (recipe to follow soon!).
It’s a really cute little book, and super easy to dip in and out of, so perfect for busy Mamas.
The Hobbit By J.R.R. Tolkin
I am a hobbit at heart. I like being tucked up at home with the fire on, eating lots of yummy food. This is such a cosy book to read under a blanket and the adventure you get taken on is the absolute best. It’s exciting and scary and fun and one I would recommend for everyone ages 10 and up.
The Thirteenth Tale by Diane Setterfield
“We sit reading as usual. It is late autumn, it is raining and the windows have misted up”
This line from the book pretty much sums up everything I love about it. It’s in-depth and descriptive and takes you right into the story like you know the characters. It’s not all nice, some of the characters are hard to read about and definitely not likeable. It’s a book written for book lovers and while gothic ghost stories aren’t normally my thing, I love this one.
