Lining Kitchen Drawers

I love our home, it was built in the 1960’s and has years of history within its walls that we are lucky to be adding to with our little family. It has big windows, a narrow staircase and not a single straight wall or right angle in the whole place. Paul has confirmed this every time he has had to put up a corner shelf (4 times, I remember them well) and when he added shelves to what he assures me is the wonkiest cupboard in the whole of England – I’m sure anyone else living in an older home has had similar experiences when it comes to DIY.

One thing I don’t love so much, in fact, one thing I actually I hate, are the brown plastic drawers in our kitchen. We painted over the orange coloured wooden doors and bought new handles last summer which has added so much light to our favourite room, but I just couldn’t put up with the brown plastic looking at me every time I would open the drawer to lay the table. We looked at replacing the drawers in their entirety but that was expensive, especially as all for of them were different sizes (obviously, because having the same sized drawers would be logical).

So, after a bit of research I decided to line them in sticky back plastic. Paul took a little convincing on this one, but trust me it works; it is the cheapest option and sticky back plastic has come a long way since I used it on my school text books (especially as it comes in more than the three primary colours now).

I got a role of “Fablon” in Heritage Silver, it’s self adhesive and water resistant so can be cleaned down with a damp cloth, and at 45cm x 2 metres it (just) did all 4 of our kitchen drawers. It was a little tricky to get the Fablon on without any bubbles – definitely a two person job – but I am so chuffed with how it looks. No more nasty brown! And, a little insider hint: it really doesn’t need to be perfect, it just needs to be good enough, as with all your bits and bobs on top of it, minor imperfections aren’t noticeable.
